Guy sends me his bike , says he wants the lugs(?) SD Yellow Chrome and the pipes SD Wet White. I figure a nice fade job, piece of cake. No, he wants the scalloped pipe fittings yellow and the pipes white, decals replaced (supplied), clear coated. So looks like much more labor intensive taping off the fittings. How would you guys do this. I'm thinking shoot the fittings yellow then mask them and shoot the rest white. Seems like less masking time than shooting white , masking all the white pipes and then shooting the yellow. What would you charge for all this? And what process would you use?

Your steps sound fine. Yellow first, full cure. Mask with blue painters tape, shoot white, cure till flowout, remove tape, full cure on the white. You'll actually be overcuring the yellow a bit, but if it turns "yellow", who's to notice?

Also, remove the grease zerk fitting in the back of the neck and replace with a 1/4-28 UNF bolt or screw BEFORE blasting.

About a $Buck75 - $200

I just did a bike like this. I charged 165 frame only, he supplied the bike in bare metal...I had to take 15 min in the blast cabinet to rough it up. If I had to do it again I would go 180 in the same form, so for you 225 or a little more.

I learned a lesson then, I'd shoot the entire bike white then the yellow lugs. You'll be able to get a cleaner edge on the pipes doing it this way. But then again I don't have the details of this yellow chrome you speak of. Its easier to mask the pipes then to wrap miles of tape up in the lug areas to make a clean job.

Good luck

Ok, so now you have both methods - anybody got a quarter to flip?

The Yellow is PBTP SD Yellow Chrome. I was told both ways to mask on PBTP forum, and I agree there is more pipe to wrap by doing the whole thing white first, but I would get cleaner transition on the lugs this way, I can wrap the pipes in aluminum foil to cut down masking time. I quoted him $75 for the frame, 50% more (37.50) for multi color, 50% more for clear coat, $10 for applying decals, and after realizing he didnt want fade but sharp edges, I told him about an hour ($65)masking it off. He said he knew I wouldnt work for free, so he went for it, $225, plus shipping($15.00), plus insurance for $500.00

About a $Buck75 - $200 I hate even partial flow out with the blue painters tape, seems it always wants to leave glue residue that is a PITA to remove if it doesnt ruin the finish to begin with. If I shoot white first all I am taping is flat pipe that the green high temp will lay down on much easier. I also wasnt sure about the tape wrapping down the sides of the lugs and getting a good sharp transition. I am not sure yet if that is a zerk or not , if it is it is painted over, I couldnt see a hole or cap to grease it with.

O fyi EW sells those blasting vinyl caps. THey work good for zerks, but dont forget to remove it or you end up with a pile of goo.

it will use more tape, but be much easier to mask the pipes.

I can wrap the lengths with aluminum foil and only have to mask the ends, so that should save time and tape.

or maybe mask the certain areas that need to be masked and then wipe down or vacume the pipes clean????

Or that, wrapping in aluminum foil is quick and easy, removes quick and easy to do any touch up cleaning of any dry powder.

If it's not already too late....that grease zerk (if that's what it is) *could* be a "drive-in" type, but it still needs to come out, so a normal tapered plug will do

As it turns out , it is NOT a zerk , but a brazed on lug for mounting a tire pump. I intenionally did it Yellow to seperate it from the White tube.
