Basecoat on-how long do I wait to tape over?

I am about to basecoat the whole car and would then like to apply more masking tape to spray the stripes/graphics. After how long is it safe to tape it? Also, is there a maximum time that I can paint over the basecoat again with more basecoat or clearcoat? Reason I am asking is that the car may be sat in the red basecoat until I can get it to a booth to do the important stuff. This may take some time (weeks?).

what kind of paint are you using? it really won't matter if it will take you weeks to clear it you'll just have to wetsand it with 1000 grit or 1500 grit sandpaper. but to skip the step of wetsanding you'd need to clear it within 24 hours.

I would shoot an innercoat clear over the basecoat, so you can sand that. I dont think sanding the basecoat is a good idea. especially not a metalic or pearl basecoat. Al
