Presently resoring a race boat, the trailer has tandom chrome fenders. No rust or pitting, but has fine scratches in the chrome. Best discription would be like if some one rubs car painted black that is dirty, when washed there are fine scratches in paint.
Is it poss to polish them out? a 50% improvement would be ok, does not have to be like new chrome.
Thanks Dave![]()
You might be able to do it, but the nature of the plate makes the odds against you, the chrome is very thin .0000001 to .000001 range, so you'll "scratch through it" in not time. Take an inconspicuous spot, and use a clear coat safe paint polishing compound on it. You'll know it's working when the rag turns a grey color, rather than the typical black from most other metals. Either way, less is more in this case.
Most likely the scratches are through the chrome and into the nickel, in that case the only amount of buffing that'll make them go away is going to burn right through the protection chrome layer, then you've really made it worse.
