  1. Anyone used that "Super Alloy 1" From Muggy Weld?

    Hello everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone has used that pot metal repair alloy from
    Muggy Weld?
Does Eastwood sell anything close to this product?
    Would lead work as well?
I'm not a welder but would welcome some advice on that or a similar product.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dave

Yes, I have used it. Still have some. I restored my Dad's 58 Chevy pickup, and accidently dropped the carburator while I was rebuilding it (stupid). It broke off a part that was not weight bearing. I used the "Super Alloy" to do the repair, more or less brazing the part back on, and went ahead and rebuilt the carb. That was about 8 years ago and its been working well since.

I have also recently used it to repair the threads on the roof pillar that holds on the stainless trim on my 57 chevy project. Its works well right now, but it's too early to tell how this will eventually turn out.

Anyway, I've been happy with it. I think as long as the repair is not stuctural or weight bearing, it'll be OK.

  3. Using Muggy Weld Super Alloy 1 now on an heat exchanger

Hey there. I'm trying to use this stuff now and having a devil of a time. I've got a thermometer on my workpiece, have it heated to just over 350 with a propane torch, I'm applying my flux and trying to plug a hole in a heat exchanger very similar to what Muggy Weld has on their website.

I can't get the rod to flow very well at all and once I do, there's still tons of air leaking out where I've applied the brazing rod.

    Any thoughts?

  4. I have only used Super alloy 1 a couple of times, nothing which required sealing.
I found that I was overheating the material and the rod would not stick.
I found I had to heat the work slow and use a lot of the flux.
Making sure the area was super clean was also key.
I was also able to rebuild part of a headlamp shell that had corrorded away.
There certainly seemed a trick to getting it to work but I am pleased with the result.
    Maybe practice with some scrap.
