Default How do I paint a cast iron block without it rusting?

Every time I scrub down a cast iron engine block, or cast iron exhaust manifold with Dawn dishwashing soap, and rince with water it starts to rust in about 30 seconds as it drys. I don't seem to have enough time to paint the cast iron before this surface rust starts to appear. Is there a better way or some other product I should be cleaning the cast iron with? I have tried a hot steamer also to clean cast iron with but have the same problem with surface rust appearing right before my eyes as it dries. Is there a better way ??

eastwood item 10120, metal wash. best way is probably to spray it on with a spray bottle right after you rinse, or as you are rinsing. It will prevent flash rust.

But I understand that you cannot paint over this product without again cleaning it off. Won't it flash rust again, before painting?

Actually, 2003Z offers an excellent solution with Metal Wash. http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/pro...ord=metal+wash As you can see, it is intended excactly for the purpose you describe.
