It depends on where you buy your powder from. Anodized red from CC looks like anodized aluminum that was not polished before it was anodized. The candy red from CC looks like polished aluminum that has been anodized a deep red. I haven't tried EW's anodized red yet but I am pretty sure that it will look like CC's candy red.

Here is EW's anodized red over Rosey's Silver Bullet basecoat. The photo doesn't really show the metallic sparkle from the basecoat very well. In the sunlight, it really pops.

EW Anodized Red over Rosey's Silver Bullet basecoat, EW Single Stage Chrome, EW Translucent Blue over Rosey's Silver Bullet basecoat. The red and blue definitely look a lot different in varying light. The metallic sparkle doesn't really show up until the sun hits it. Very difficult to photograph the true effect.

It's Rosey's (ebay) silver bullet basecoat. Similar to EW Silver Sparkle, but maybe even coarser metallic.

nice job, but tell me that the pink cover dos nt go on your own car

No it's not for me, but I'm not scared to run a pink cover...it's just a cover. I'm confident in my man-hood to sport pink. Hell, I'd put lace on my valve cover if it made people talk. Even bad press is good press. ;)

That cover is actually for a heavily boosted (turbo) race car that needed a trim color to make his car noticeble. The center of his Weld race wheels and a few other trim pieces will also be getting a few coats of neon pink. Not that it'll mater as his car see's the 600-700whp range.

SteveOur exhaust creates more frictional torque than the actuall torque produced by something that small! Just Kidding!! I hope that is RWD and not FWD. That would be some hellashish tourque steer!

It's a FWD. Sport FWD to be exact. Basically stock interior, 4cyl turbo.

baz
01-25-2007, 01:49 AM
hey d ont you ever sleep . :D are you in the same time zone as me .
its not wrinkle its textured not as rough as wrinkle , much smoother
if you look at hd s street bob you wil see they have 2 textures of black the rough one is wrinkle and the lighter one on the motor is fine texture
mine comes from tiger drylac .polishing was the easy part on this job .
to polish fins on the heads and barrels takes me 2 hours for the four parts.
but that s a secret d ont tell anyone :D

that was intentional . the complete wheel was polished then i covered the whole thing in candy red and wipe the powder off the front lip leaving the spokes , the valve stem and the rear section of the rim in red then cured and repeated the process with second coat , cured and then top coated the whole wheel with acrylic clear . the picture does not really do it justice

I have circles of various sizes and just found the right sized ones and stuck them in the holes. The new Z's wheels are very similar to old toyotas and some domestics that used a long shank and flat washer instead of a tapered lug nut.

Mirror white over badly pitted chrome. First blasted as smooth as possible, applied a coat of KL Primer, sanded, one coat of white, sanded and a second coat of white. They don't look bad from 10 feet away, but everywhere there was a pit, it pinholed. You can see it in the second pic if you look close.

Looks great Marc, I have been questioned about doing some lug nuts but wondered how well they would hold up while putting them on.
I bought a special set of plastic lined lug sockets, hand tighten them then torque carefully with a torque wrench and they will be ok as long as you dont have to change them a bunch. Once is usually all that is required for 20k miles, so it isnt that big of concern. Nver use an impact driver, which, by the way , should never be used on a lugnut anyway for everyday use.

Plastic lined inside and out so you dont mar the lugnut or the recess in the wheel,$37 a set , I couldnt find the sockets individually.

Because impact drivers are usually set for about 200lbft of torque and most (not all) mechanics are no better educated than high school, if that. Shops that use an impact on their wheels usually have them way over torqued. Wheels should be torqued to 75-100 lbft., no more.

Ok, I gotcha. I just had never heard to not use an impact gun on lugs ever. Anytime I use and impact gun I lugs, I use my electric snap on gun that is 100 ft lbs, or my pnuematic gun has different settings.

Like I said "not all mechanics". The good shops use a "torque limiting socket" that should be used in steps and in the star pattern. Ever tried to change a tire that a shop had used an impact on and you are using a tire iron and cant budge the dang thing, thats why.

I use torque sticks... I will only hand torque or use a torque stick. Hard to know what an unlimited (or limited only by setting on back of gun) is actually torquing to. I've only been working on cars for about 5 years though =P

you can say that they are.

the gloss black was coated first then when cooled the vinyll sticker was placed then the main color so when you pull the vinyll off you can say its sort of pressed or indented in;)

oh wait and if you ment if the letters were allready depressed in the calipers then no they are put back on in a powder coated method

Ok so you did the lettering coat first, put decal on, sprayed other color, then somehow pulled off decal without disturbing the uncured powder before curing? Or did you have to cure it with the decal in and cut it out or something? Sorry if these are newbie questions.

Or did you have to cure it with the decal in and cut it out or something? Sorry if these are newbie questions. When this procedure is done , you put the second color in the oven just til it starts to flow, remove and let cool alittle then remove the stickers and then back in the oven for full cure. yes, you have to be careful removing the stickers , but this is easily accomplished with and exacto knife or other suitable tool. Doing it this way will give you a nice smooth flowed edge at the transition between the letter and the field color, then you can clear coat for an even smoother look. If you full cure before removing decal, there will be a sharp edge where the letters were that will need addressing by sanding and or clear coating , so the partial cure and remove is the preferred method.

Everything that he said:D

maybe for my next set ill take some pics of the process and maybe we can have it as a sticky?

These were the forks the customer brought to me just to strip. Not realizing they were Magnesium I put them in the B17, BIG mistake, came out heavily pitted. I told the customer I could run a few coats of primer on them, sand them smooth and shoot whatever color he liked, of course he chose Gloss Black, which meant htye would have to be very smooth before coating. I then thought a Vein would save me hours of sanding so I asked him about that and he really liked to color so I was able to salvage the deal. Stripped a frame cranks and forks and ended up coating the forks for free, easier out for me than replacing a set forks worth a few hundred $s.

I blast the whole thing with 40/80 Black Diamond, blow it off well, making sure there is no media lodged in the fins, rinse with alcohol and shoot the whole thing, turn it upside down and shoot again to make sure both sides of the fin tips get covered and cure. I know there has been a lot of debate on coating I/Cs, but there is absolutelty no detriment to doing them. All I do is tape the openings off so no media gets inside.

thanks for the tips! i was reading something recently where the topic of powder coating intercoolers came up. and someone pointed out whatever company that uses that as their stock finish from the factory. It was probably me, I did some research with the intercooler manufacturers when the issue came up whether you should coat them or not. I spoke with several and they all use powder coating as an option to their polished units. Though the powder coat may make a slight(almost not noticeable) differance in power, all the I/Cs perform better than rated. For example if you needed an I/C for a 1000hp motor and got the appropriate one, the polished one would make power up to 1100hp and the coated one 1095hp. So, yes, the coated one would make less, but would still exceed the requirements. So no loss from coating.

yeah... my original idea was to do the whole room in the cheaper slatwall, but i saw this stuff at a local mazda dealership and it looked great, so i decided to just do 3.5 nice panels instead of everything. it would have came out to about the same price, so i went for it. turned out really nice, and i have half a panel left over that i'm planning to stick on a rolling frame and i'll have something for car shows, etc. if i ever make it to any.

Have frame, trans., rearend, third member, all other suspension/steering pcs., full exhaust system less the headers, inner fender wells, the large splash in front of the rad. support, a box full of other underhood sheetmetal, a batch of brand new Jegs polished parts to get clear coat, bumper arms, brackets out the wazoo, fuel tank, calipers, rotors and on, and on:eek:
